The short version: every voice note is saved on your iPhone first. You may use FOSS only on that device, or sign in with Apple or email to add private cloud backup and transcription. FOSS has no advertising or tracking and does not use notes to train models without a separate opt-in.
When you record a voice note, the audio file and its transcript are stored on your device first, in the app's local storage. You can see the audio files yourself in the iOS Files app, export transcripts and metadata from Settings, and delete any capture — or all of them — at any time. Deleting the app removes data in its app container, but does not remove copies you previously exported. Your iPhone backup may include app data according to your Apple backup settings; that backup is operated by Apple, not FOSS, and the FOSS developer cannot access it through the app. If you sign in, FOSS also creates a private cloud record linked to your account. Processing audio is removed after successful transcription or within 24 hours; transcripts remain until you delete the capture or account.
FOSS first attempts transcription using Apple's Speech framework with on-device recognition. For signed-in accounts, it also uploads the recording to private Supabase storage and sends it to OpenAI solely to create the transcript. If either service is unavailable, the local audio and any completed transcript remain safe and the cloud queue retries later.
If you use a cloud account, FOSS and its processors receive an account identifier, your email or any private relay address Apple shares, voice audio, and transcript text for authentication, storage, transcription, security, and support. Data is linked to your FOSS account and isolated from other users by database and storage access policies. FOSS has no analytics SDK, advertising, or tracking. If you contact support by email, we receive what you include.
FOSS asks for microphone access (used only while the recording indicator is active) and speech recognition access (to create an on-device transcript). Both can be revoked any time in iOS Settings; recording or transcription stops working until the relevant permission is re-enabled.
FOSS does not use your notes for model training. The app does not collect a placeholder or future-use consent. If a later version offers an optional data-contribution program, it will explain the specific data, purpose, recipients, retention, and withdrawal process before asking for separate consent.
You can continue without an account and keep notes on this iPhone only. In Settings, signed-in users can sign out or delete their account. Account deletion schedules removal of cloud recordings, transcripts, profile data, and the FOSS authentication identity. Local captures are kept until you separately delete them, preventing a network failure from erasing the only copy. You can delete one local capture or all local captures at any time.
Calendar, health, wearable, and workplace integrations are not active in this version. Before one ships, this policy and the in-app explanation will be updated and the relevant permission or consent will be requested in context.
FOSS is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from them through the app.
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted at this address with an updated date.
